I’M BUMMED ABOUT SUMMER!

Hey Brandon,

I’m totally bummed because school is almost out!!! I know what you’re thinking – most kids are super excited to be free for the summer! And yeah, I’m looking forward to a break from teachers, homework, and getting up early every morning. But honestly, those things are worth dealing with when it means I get to hang out with my friends every day! I don’t live close enough to walk or bike to any of my friends’ houses! I’m going to be sooo bored and I’m going to miss everyone sooo much! What am I going to do?!?!

Super Sad Summer

What’s Up Super Sad Summer,

I definitely know lots of people who are really excited about summer and some people reading your letter might think that’s crazy. But hey, I totally get it. I like seeing friends every day. I also like the structure of a regular school day. You just…know what to expect from each day when you get up in the morning, right? That appeals to my personality. And honestly? I don’t hate ALL of my homework. Some of it is interesting.

So yeah, I get it. A long summer stretched out ahead of you can seem like it’s going to last forever. And missing your friends is the worst! Here are some things I’m doing to make the most of my summer. Maybe some of them will work for you, too:

  1. Stay busy. Some families are super busy with camps, activities, and travel. But even if you’re not doing any of that, you can find ways to stay busy. See if there’s anywhere you can volunteer, like an animal shelter or a library, or even going on walks to pick up litter in parks or on beaches. Maybe you can make some money babysitting, mowing lawns, or walking dogs. You could also sign up for activities that interest you, like music lessons, drawing classes, or martial arts. They’re also a great way to make new friends to hang with over the summer.
  2. Set goals. It could be as small as finishing a jigsaw puzzle, mastering a video game, or reading a book (I personally recommend my good friend Max Crumbly’s newest one, The Misadventures Of Max Crumbly 3: Masters of Mischief). Or it could be as big as training for a 5K or learning to play an instrument. You could try knitting a scarf or planting a garden. If your goal is too easy, try setting one you can’t complete in a day or a week. Something that will take some time, practice and studying YouTube tutorials to really master. It’ll keep you busy AND you’ll have accomplished something at the end of the summer.
  3. Spend time with family. If you have siblings, they might be bored too. I know it’s not the same as hanging with friends, but maybe there are some fun things you can do with your siblings to pass the time – or even have fun! 🙂 You guys could have movie marathons, board games, or campouts in the backyard, to name a few. Or if you don’t have any siblings, hang with other family members instead.
  4. Catch up on all of your fav shows, movies, and videos. Parents tend to limit how much screen time we get while we’re in school and have homework to do. So, now is your chance to go crazy with TV, Netflix, or YouTube!
  5. Spend time with your friends. Okay, I know you said you don’t live close enough, but if you make an effort to coordinate with parents, I’m sure you can arrange some sleepovers or other ways to hang with them. And if not, there’s always video chatting or other kinds of digital communication. I know it’s not the same, but still—it’s not like you say goodbye on the last day of school and then never hear from your friends again until fall.

I hope these ideas help. I know it seems like summer is going to last forever, but it really won’t. You’ll be back to school and hanging with friends before you know it. And maybe you’ll get some more ideas in the comments of how to spend your summer!

Hey guys, how do YOU pass the time during summer? How do you stay connected with friends if you don’t live close by? Tell us about it in the comments.

My friend/best friend/bröther/hopefully future husband and I love eachother a lot, but as far as I know, it’s just me who’s confused as to how I like him. Is it a brötherly way, or… I just don’t really know.. He’s told me he’s never had a crush before and he “doesn’t really even know how to crush” but.. I’m thinking (or rather hoping) he’s hiding something from me..
I know this is totally irrelevant, but I just need someplace I can spill stuff..

      Hi confused sister,
I get why you said something totes irrevlavent. How,we ALL need places to vent out our feelings, right?!
Anyways,it looks like maybe you’re right. He might be hiding that he likes you cuz he’s embarresed to admit it.Most boys who have a girl as a BFF might do that cuz they think the girl bff will think it’s stupid.
But he might be telling the truth.idk really, but I think the best way to do this is confront him.
NOT in a super stakirsh way, though.I probably should’ve said apporach him.There.Now,look.You might wanna pay attenion on how you’re doing it,because this could make him feel supes uncomfatable and maybe even embarresed. So,do it like this:I’m gonna ask you a question, but you don’t have to answer it if it makes you feel uncomfortable, though I would apprecieate it if you would .”So,here it go’s:Do you have a crush on me?!
This works SO much better than:I know you have a crush on someone.Who is it??!!Cuz that’ll be putting him on the spot and he’ll feel uncomfartable.
If he dosen’t answer, don’t push him.You want to know the answer, but you also want to be a good BFF-sister to him.And being a good BFF-sister means NOT pushing him to tell you something he’s not reay to tel you.
Though if he does answer, and his answer is no,don’t panic. It just means you’re probably better off just being freinds, not mates.
Though if he DOES say yes, great!Kudos to you for asking him!
      Hope this helps!
      -Secretly shera
P.S.:If you feel uncomfortable telling him in person, you can always text him.”

    Dear Super Sad Summer,
I also miss my friends during summer break.
But you can do fun things whilst on the break. Here is a list that you could do:
    ~ Read (books lovers especially!)
~ Go to the pools (you will have fun splashing and swimming at the pool)
~ Play with your siblings (okay, I admit mine are REALLY annoying, but they’re still fun to play with!)
~ Play games on a device. It’s pretty fun!!!
    ~ Watch Youtube
~ Curl your hair or give yourself a makeover (you don’t have to do this one)
~ Paint your nails (if you don’t like this, skip to the next one!)
    ~ Face-time or call a friend.
~ Go on Snapchat or Instagram or TicTok. See what’s new
    ~ Go surfboarding
~ Relax at the beach and maybe tan yourself or sun-bath. Maybe go for a swim?
~ Cook something delicious for your family
~ Have a sleepover with your friends!
    ~ Make something. Be creative!!!
    ~ Sleep in
~ Water your plants (I know it’s not that fun, but it’ a great past-time)
~ Go shopping for new clothes and accesories and shoes
~ Maybe plan a party for your friends and family?????
Anyone else could think of any more ideas??? Okay, I’ve listed a lot. Maybe you could do one of the things I listed on your summer break.
    xoxo

No offense, but it kind of bothers me that you are complaining about not seeing you friends for just 2-3 months. I don’t know when I’ll ever see any of my classmates again, because we’re graduating from elementary school. That’s why it bothers me! I don’t know if you’ll see your friends next year, but assuming that you are, know how lucky you are to be seeing your friends for another year! But all in all, our generation is lucky to have our friends be just a phone call away!

      Hi Sad girl,
This is heartbreaking and sweet! It can be hard when your cursh moves, escpially if it’s far away!
      Now,maybe he’s still close by??!!
If he is,maybe you can still be toegther, but just not in school. You could hang-out together and do homework at a cafe’ or something after school. So,if he’s moving close by,here’s my advice:Exchange numbers and stay i touch, and scedule hang-outs.
If he’s moving far away,I’m sorry to say,but you’re gonna need to crush on a guy.
It took me a while to say this cuz it’s so hertbreaking!”
But don’t be frustrated if you can’t find a crush .”It sounds like for the time being, your secret crush won’t be moving!
      Hope this helps!
