I’M WAY TALLER THAN MY CRUSH!!!

Hi Brandon,
Some of my friends have been criticizing me because of my crush. He is the shortest boy in my grade and I’m one of the tallest. When we stand next to each other it’s kind of like a high-rise building next to a one-story ranch house, like the one I live in. My friends think that we would look ridiculous together, especially at things like school dances. I’m pretty sure he likes me too, but I don’t know. Should I give up on my crush because we’re just too different?

Hopeless High Rise

Hey High Rise,
It’s a bummer that your friends are giving you grief about your crush. Middle school is tough enough without having to feel insecure about something that nobody can control. I think if this guy is nice and you like him, that’s all that matters!

Okay, food example time (man, I’m hungry right now—I could even go for some Queasy Cheesy pizza and that stuff almost always leaves people with a stomach ache). One time, my grandpa pulled everything out of the refrigerator (I’m talking all the way down to the mustard) and told me to try combining things I’d never had before. Yeah, I know that sounds weird, but it was a slow Friday night, okay? 😋

I tried tuna with peanut butter (thumbs WAY down), pickles with mayo (just plain bizarre), pudding on meatloaf (not great), and salad with applesauce in it (not bad!). Finally, I discovered something miraculous. . .

Cold pizza and spaghetti sandwiches!!! Hey, don’t knock it until you’ve try it!

What I’m getting at is, it doesn’t matter if two things don’t look like they go together, as long as they taste great to YOU. If you like this boy, I’m guessing you have lots in common—so start thinking about what you have in common instead of focusing on the one thing that you don’t (height).

Sure, some guys can feel a little defensive if the girl they like is taller than them. And middle school is a place where people tend to criticize physical features. But like my grandpa says, it’s not the outside that matters—that’s just a shell. It’s the inside that counts!

Plenty of girls like shorter guys. There are lots of examples of couples that work with a big height difference. I’m not really up on celebrity stuff, so I asked Nikki and she gave me the following deets to pass along to you:

  • The singer Keith Urban is shorter than his wife, actress Nicole Kidman. (Especially when she wears high heels—Nikki told me to add that.)
  • Singer Pharrell Williams (Nikki loves his song, “Happy”) is shorter than his wife, Helen Lasichanh.
  • Carla Bruni, the wife of former French president Nicolas Sarkozy, is WAY taller than him.

How the heck does Nikki know all that??? I swear, girls have the craziest collection of knowledge.

So, okay, I’ll leave you with two basic pieces of advice:

  1. Tell your friends to please stop bugging you because it’s really rude, both to you and your crush.
  2. Don’t let physical differences get in the way of your heart!

Have you ever felt like your crush wouldn’t like you because you’re taller, shorter, or have any other kind of physical differences? What did you do about it? Tell us in the comments.

    Hi, Hopeless High Rise,
Oh my! That’s uncool your friends are criticizing you! Actually, I can’t relate much as I haven’t had a boyfriend or crush. But I’ve had friends who have crushes which are WAY smaller than they are. (I’ve got some short boys in my class!) but they do not get teased! But I’ve got some advice for you!

    1. Know that you are NOT alone! Think about the people Brandon mentioned. Also, have you watched the movie Matilda? Her Dad is way shorter than her Mother. I know that’s fictional, BUT, just think about all the people (girls) who have crushes on shorter boys!

    2. Don’t give up! If you think he likes you, then don’t give up on him! Don’t let height and differences get in the way of your friendship! Everyone is different, different heights, different hair, different accents etc. And that isn’t it! So you should NOT give up on him!

    3. Tell your friends that they are not acting so kind. Maybe don’t say that, but give them the clue that you are NOT so happy with them. Instead of saying “Guys! Stop being rude, or else, ok?” Maybe give them a chance. They are your friends really, and they are probably joking. Maybe say something like “I need to talk to you! Please stop teasing me about my crush because it’s making me feel quite bad. We are all different! So please could you stop? Thanks!” And hopefully they will stop.

    4. Your crush will grow. Assure yourself this. My Dad once told me what happened when he was at school and I’m going to share it with you. So, my Dad had a girl in his class which was about 5 foot or around that. She was the tallest in her class, but at least 2-3 years later, everyone was taller! So, by the time you are in High School, your crush will be taller and you will be shorter! But, this may not happen but boys tend to grow taller then the girls. And I’m very tall as well!

    5. See who their crush is! They might be crushing on a shorter guy too! And then you’ll know for sure that some other people feel the same way and are in your shoes!

So, that’s my advice which I hope helps!!

My fave music is pop because my fave singers sing pop.

    Great advice Brandon 😉
Don’t worry appearance and tallness do not matter at all, it’s the inside of u, ur feelings, that matter.
SO BE URSELF!! I mean me wearing glasses (and soon braces) still makes my BFFs like me, and everyone else… so don’t listen to ur friends girlfriend, I mean, it’s none of their business. I invented PEACH PIE and it was a BIG HIT in the neighborhood that 50 pounds sterling!!! Nice bringing the food up Brandon!!

    Yours truly

My mum was tall when she was about 12 and my dash was really short (I’ve seen pictures) but now my dad is pretty tall, people grow! Also, height is just a feature, like frizzy hair or glasses. Don’t let that get in the way of your friendship!

  18. Diary of a Dorky Potterhead says

Hey! I actually wish that I was tall! I am in the 8th grade and I am just 4 feet and 11 inches!!! I mean the guys in 6th grade are taller than me! But I really don’t care. I am me. I take this attitude from my cousin sister who is already in college and she is my height. But then, I have another cousin (I have a lot of cousins) who is CRAZY tall. He is the tallest person I know! He is 6 feet and 9 inches and he is just 18 years old! So, if you are feeling bad about your height, don’t worry. It just means that more people will look up to you. literally! I already look up to you because of your height! And if you still feel bad, watch “Tall Girl” on Netflix. I am sure you will feel better after that.
Good luck with your crush! Bye!

Omg! I don’t have a crush, but I am one of the shortest kids at my school. This also reminds me of a time I went to a Stake Dance, and we played a game called Cinderella. (if you don’t know what that is, all the girls discard one of their shoes and whichever boy picks it up is the one you dance with) Anyway, the guy I got was at least three times my height, basically a giant to me! Not exactly advice, just thought it was an interesting story. 😛

      Hi Koala Dork!

So, you had a fight with your friend. Don’t worry! Everything will be all right!

Since you didn’t say what problem you had, I can’t really give advice THAT deep. You don’t have to tell me! I’m still gonna try to help!

I suggest just talking to her, but if you have coronavirus where you live, you can’t really do that. Maybe just send her a super thoughtful email with a virtual card! Or video chat with her! Just tell her you’re super sorry and that you really hope she can forgive you. And add anything else your heart needs to say.

And welcome to the awesome DD website!

Have a FANTASTIC and AWESOME day!

      -Lefty Dork
