When I was little, I thought camps were TOTALLY lame…especially day camps!
I mean, really, who wants to sit in a sweaty, smelly bus twice a day when school’s out for the summer? And who wants to spend the warmest days of the year sitting around making Indian headdresses and other camp-like crafts?
Parents, you might as well send your kid to a sweatshop in a third world county for July and August…at least then she might make something cute and fashionable!
And then the whole overnight camp thing…there’s a reason why a TON of horror movies take place at sleep away camps:
You COULD be home eating popsicles, lounging by a pool, and recording all your favorite shows for nighttime, but instead you’re getting eaten alive by bugs, sleeping in a cramped cabin, and realizing all the boys are segregated in a whole different section of the camp…OH, THE HORROR!
These are all the things I USED to think…but I have to say, my friends, that my assumptions were totally misguided. My cousin went to camp last summer, and I got ten letters detailing pure awesomeness, all proving that I was totally mistaken.
According to letter number two, paragraph four, sentence three: overnight camp is “…so flippin’ awesomesauce, and also the counselors are super young and chill. It’s like a massive party, without parents, all summer long.”
Whoa! Clearly, I was way off the mark. Why didn’t I think of the obvious no-parents perk?!
According to my cousin, you can pretty much customize how you want to do the whole camp thing. You can go for just a week, or do the whole summer if that’s your thing.
You can choose a camp with a lot of swimming…or find one that’s all about cheerleading. Whatever you’re into, there’s a camp for it!
I don’t think I want to go to camp THIS summer because I already have my own camp right in my hometown (Camp Hang-Out-with-Chloe-Zoey-and-Brandon-A-TON).
But if I decided to go to an actual camp, I’d be TOTALLY into one of these four:
Dance Camp
As you may remember from my “Ballet of the Zombies” experience, I got moves! Since Zoey and Chloe are super awesome dancers, too, we’d all have a blast jumping around together, like Lady Gaga back-up dancers.
OK, so maybe it would be more like Selena Gomez back-up dancers. There probably aren’t a ton of places that dress campers in meat dresses and shirts made of muppets. (Are there?)
Music Camp
Once again, I have a TON of experience here! Remember my band “Actually, I’m not really sure yet”? There’s a reason Trevor Chase LOVED our song. We may be total dorks, but we’re dorks who write AWESOME lyrics!
Art Camp
I’m sure you’re seeing a trend here (creative stuff + no parents = heaven on earth). But this one is such a no-brainer! I have always had mad art skills. Remember I tattooed practically the whole school?
I WAS BORN to go to art camp!!
Farm Camp
OK, so this one is actually not in my top four, but I just found this while googling, “types of camps,” so I just HAD to share it here!
It’s basically a camp where you learn to be a farmer…so you grow your own vegetables, milk cows, chop wood, and in some of them, you live with NO electricity like people did in the old days.
In other words: the counselors work you LIKE A DOG all day, and then at night when you want to curl up with a good book (like my new one…hint hint!) you have nothing but a dripping candle lighting the pages.
I think I’d rather spend the summer with my parents!
